  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Beautifully Written, Fascinating Story about Physical Challenges, Creativity and Family : Riva Lehrer is an artists's artist. As a fellow Chicago artist, I have long known her to be admired among my peers. If she was a great artist, Dayenu (it would be enough!). It turns out that she is an excellent story-teller and writer. The story of her medical challenges, along with those of her mother, who suffered from a botched spinal surgery, is compelling and relatable. Beyond the fascinating story of her travails, and how she dealt with them, she shares tales of teen angst and first loves and lusts. There is deep examination of how we, as a society, deal with people who are different; how they are de-sexualized and objectified. Riva reveals to us the world of disability activism and helps us gain insight into the point of view of people who have physical and other challenges. There is joy, humor and provocation, along with wrenching and painful revelations. Above all, she shares her creative process, which is truly inspiring. I'm going to recommend it to my book club, although we mostly read fiction. There is much to discuss here! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. Crow -- An important and profound book. : Riva Lehrer is a consummately fine artist, creating lush and precise paintings and drawings that form a large body of work. She has been actively showing her work for some years and is well known in the Chicago artist community. She has also been a vocal activist in the growing Disability Movement. Now she has written a formidable work, a memoir, placing herself in a context of alienation: woman, disabled, gay. Ms Lehrer has bonded with her painting subjects and invited them to collaborate with her in a series of unique and outstanding portraits. Her work is singular and so is her voice. Her writing is vivid and descriptive - entirely focused and never self indulgent. She is tough - or at least strong - and her sense of humor shines through. I definitely recommend this book for its cutting edge insights, remarkable voice, and luminous prose . Also - illustrated with many of the author's works! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steven E. Brown -- Important Disability Culture book : I so looked forward to this memoir--and I am glad I got it right away. The book is divided into sections on growing up with a disability in Cincinnati, OH in the latter part of the 20th century but prior to the ADA of 1990 and on life as an artist, The first section is interesting and describes in detail growing up with spina bifida during this time and in an interesting family, But it the was second part i found most fascinating, describing learning to live with diverse interests and as an adult artist in Chicago finding and embracing Disability Culture. I greatly appreciated all the art included in this book and the explanations of each piece of art in the appendix. Anyone with an interest in Disability Culture should find and read this book. I hope it will also find its way into many libraries! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Excellent! : This book is much more than I expected. It is a comprehensive journey into the experience of disability, It is also about family, love, tragedy and coming of age. The author’s style is fresh and engaging. Her point of view is that of normalcy. The book is tightly crafted and unpredictable. Lots going on here. Kudos to Ms Lehrer. She is a very talented artist and painter. I would have enjoyed seeing more of her paintings, but there is always Google. Here, she emerges as a competent storyteller. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ben Mattlin -- Painstakingly detailed & charming memoir that's sure to become a classic. : A charming, thoroughly researched memoir. Lehrer has a prodigious memory and knows her subject well. The writing is clear and companionable. This is not your typical memoir in that there's less of a sense of danger from poverty or alcoholism or violence. But it's an enduring look at an era and a population that's often marginalized. Destined to become a classic. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from happy camper -- Captivating Read! : This very personal book admits the reader into the taboo world of the "less than perfect" experience and make it our own, or as much as such can be. Extremely well written, this is a straightforward memoir with humor and honesty. Nothing maudlin or self pitying here, just a good life affirming honest read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elizabeth Harrison -- A rich window into life : Riva Lehrer's memoir provides a clear and rich window into how one individual has navigated the everyday tangles of life as a child, a student, a disabled person, an artist, a lover, an activist. Lehrer emerges as an explorer of what it means to be human and of how that humanity can be shared with others in an authentic yet respectful way. A stunning book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Absorbing and Fully Realized : I loved this book. Read it on Kindle, but had to order a hard copy. While the subject matter can be difficult, Lehrer's honesty and humor, as well as her skill as a writer, kept me engrossed. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2020 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from reader -- AN INSIGHTFUL JOURNEY IN LIFE : I binge-read this amazing memoir in two days. Beautifully written and illustrated with the author's own artwork. A joy to read with a lump in the throat moments alongside laugh-out-loud events. The short chapters hold the book together so it never feels too long. Treat yourself to a read that will change your perception of both disability and art. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amy -- Must Read Memoir : "Science fiction films, books, and games posit hominids with as many limbs, eyes, wings, hooves, and heads as can fit on a body - beings that we claim we want to meet - but we recoil at the reality of human divergence."
